Air Asia launched a promotion to New Zealand on Dec 2010. I was hooked. New Zealand is my dream destination! The route was from Malaysia, not Bangkok, to New Zealand, but my friends and I did not care!!! We could fly from Bangkok to Malaysia in a cheap price, of course, with Air Asia.
So, we tried to book the tickets. As you may know, booking tickets with Air Asia was not easy and we had to book two flights. There were limited seats for the cheapest price. And we did not get the cheapest price, but what we got was not that bad. It was still very cheap.
This trip we all (5 people) flew from Bangkok to Malaysia and from Malaysia to Christchurch and met one more friend who flew from Sydney. Our road trip started from Christchurch.
After booking flight tickets, we drafted the itinerary for our ten days in South Island New Zealand. Some places and some activities were not included in the trip since we did not have enough time. Finally we agreed that from Christchurch, we would go to Springfield, Hokitika, Fox Glacier, Wanaka, Arrow town, Queenstown, Te Anau, Mount Cook, Kaikoura, and back to Christchurch.
As a result, we had to change the accommodation every night!!! We thought about camper van, so we did not have to move our stuffs every day. But for some reasons which I could not remember, finally we chose to rent a car and stay in hostels.
Booking a car took us some time because there were several companies out there and we had to consider about the insurance as well. And I, who came from tropical country, realized at that time that we had to rent snow chains since it was a legal requirement.
Since we changed the accommodation every night, booking hostels took us more time than booking a car. We tried to find cheap hostels in each town.
Besides, we also tried to find discount tours such as Milford Sound Cruise Tour and whale watching tour, and booked them in advance.
Since we wanted to make this trip cheap, we also prepared food. We brought rice, instant noodle, seasoning, and snack to New Zealand.
It was my first trip that I had to prepare so many things like this, but it was one of my good trips. One thing that I am so proud of this trip is I spent only 40,000 Thai baht or 1235 US Dollar to explore South Island New Zealand for 10 days. (I have heard that some people spent 50,000 Thai Baht just for the ticket to New Zealand)
Let’s see how I explore New Zealand within a budget. I will post more about my road trip to South Island New Zealand later.
