We booked tickets to explore South Island New Zealand on December 2010. Our flight was in August 2011. Do you know what happened during that time?
Earthquake! There were strong earthquakes happening in Christchurch on February 2011 and June 2011.
Cancel the trip? Of course….NOT!!!
Paranoid? No! …Well, I guessed we were not. We flew to Christchurch airport in the evening, but instead of spending a day or two in Christchurch, we picked up a car that the airport and immediately headed to Springfield on that day.
Springfield came into our itinerary because we had to drive pass Springfield to Hokitika, our target destination and we did not want to spend much time in Christchurch.
What I want to tell you most about our first night in New Zealand is the hostel in Springfield. It was a not so good experience…well, more precise, I should say BAD experience.
Since we booked many hostels for this trip, I could not remember how we selected the hostel in Springfield. But, of course, one criterion was the price. It must be cheap!
This was our room for the first night. I was a little bit shocked. Bunk bed was fine for me, but this one umm…I think it is too difficult to climb. What do you think?
It was late evening and we were hungry. We decided to cook by ourselves for that night. Sigh, the kitchen was dirty.
When we were back to our room, we realized that there was no heater in our room! We have been there during winter!! and I also could feel that the wind sneaked into our room all the time…Urgggg!!!!.
We were not impressed with the hostel, but we thought it was less chance to meet hostel like this. So, we took many photos in our room.
Finally I moved myself to the living room, the only place in this hostel that I felt warm.
As a result, I did not sleep that night and was a little bit worry with the other nights in New Zealand.
Wait wait… I have to tell you first that this is the only hostel in New Zealand that I do not like. Our hostels for the rest of the trip were good…they were very clean and convenience. I could say that they were better than many hostels I stayed in Europe.
I cannot believe that I have experiences both the best and the worst hostels in one country!
