A review of Don Wai Floating Market

Don Wai Floating Market is located in Nakhon Pathom Province, only about 50 kilometers from Bangkok. It is an old market which is still popular among locals until these days.

In order not to disappoint you, I have to tell you that instead of calling this market Floating Market, we shall call it Riverside Market. Unlike other floating markets in Thailand, at Don Wai Market all stalls and sellers are on the ground and no boat vendors. So, if you want to visit a floating market, skip this market.

Well, even Don Wai Floating Market is not a “real” floating market, it is still worth visiting. The charm of this market is old wooden shophouses lined along the riverbank.

The market is not set up for tourist; it is a market where you can experience the authentic feel of a Thai market. And, on that day, I have seen only a group (or two groups) of tourist.

What you can expect to buy at this market is local food. This market is a food paradise.

I believe that 90% of the stalls there selling food.

We had lunch at one of the riverside restaurants which offered fresh cooked Thai food and customers could enjoy the view while eating.

Chinese-style stewed duck is one of the popular items among locals. So, give it a try.

Toddy palm cake (Khanom Tan) is another popular item.

The market was huge and took more than an hour to walk around.

Agricultural products such as fresh fruit and vegetable could be easily found here.

On that day, it was slightly raining, but the atmosphere by the river was gorgeous.

There were boat trips that brought you to Wat Rai Khing (Rai Khing Temple) and other interesting places in the area. For locals, we usually combine Wat Rai Khing and Don Wai Market into a day trip because they are not far from each other.

All in all, the market was unique in the way that it offered varieties of food and riverside atmosphere. If you want to escape from Bangkok, Don Wai Market could be your choice. It is a great place to visit especially for a food lover.
