Every year in Bolzano there will be an event named “Museum Night”. It is a special night that we can enter all museums in Bolzano for free. There are 7 museums in Bolzano: Museion, Museo della Scuola, Museo Civico, Museo Archeologico dell’Alto Adige, Museo Mercantile, Museo di Scienze Naturali dell’Alto Adige, and Castel Roncolo. Six of them are in the city center. Only one museum is quite far from the city center, but there are minivans available. So, we can visit all of them in one night (map).
I like this event because there is no event like this in my home country. I love seeing parents taking their children to museums instead of going shopping in big malls.
The museum that I like most is the most famous museum in the city. Of course, as you can guess, it is Museo Archeologico dell’Alto Adige or South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology and on that night there was a long queue in front of the museum.
People go to this museum because they want to see Ötzi, the 5000-year-old natural human mummy. I have seen the documentary on how to make a mummy before, but Ötzi is special because he is a natural mummy. He is called the iceman because he was found frozen naturally in the glacier on the border between Italy and Austria. At this museum, you will see both his body and his belongings.
All in all, I am not that interested in anthropology, but I really enjoyed and impressed while visiting this museum. If you plan to visit Bolzano, I do recommend you to spend an hour or two with the iceman. Do not worry about the language; the information is provided in not only Italian and German, but also English!
