Florence…Where I lost my wallet

On June 2012, I travelled around Italy. The trip started from Bolzano, the city I lived in for 11 months, to Milan, Lake Como, Geneva, Cinque Terre, Pisa, Siena, and Florence. This trip was special because it was the first time that I was a solo traveler. I was both excited and nervous at the same time.

I arrived Florence (or Firenze in Italian) in the late afternoon by bus from Siena. While I looked for the hostel that I booked, I walked pass the Arno River and several bridges and I was fascinated by the landscape around. I loved Florence and its architecture which is very charming and alluring.

The next day I wandered around the city which is not that big. I went to Accademia Gallery to see Michelangelo’s David. Since it was a high season period, I waited in front of the museum for 3 hours!!! So, if you go there during this period, you should either go early in the morning or book a ticket online in advance.

Florence was the last destination of the trip. After travelling for more than a week, my first solo trip was about to end. But what I did not expect happened to me on the last few hours of the trip!

I already bought the train ticket back to Bolzano, so I just walked around waiting for the train. The ticket that I bought was from Firenze Campo di Marte station to Bolzano station, but I was at Firenze S. M. Novella station, the main Florence railway station. So, I needed to buy ticket from Firenze S. M. Novella station to Firenze Campo di Marte station which cost only 1.5 Euros. I came to the train station. The queue to buy the train ticket was very long, so I decided to use my ATM card to buy the ticket from the machine. But when I tried to find my wallet in my handbag, I could not find it. So, I tried again in my backpack. It took me few minutes to admit that I had lost my wallet!!!

I still had some coins in my handbag, but if I had waited for my turn in a long queue, I would have missed the train to Bolzano. At that time, I decided not to buy the ticket to go to Firenze Campo di Marte station. Yep, I decided to take the train without a ticket!  Actually it was just only 6 minutes from Firenze S. M. Novella station to Firenze Campo di Marte station but I felt like 6 hours!!! I was nervous and afraid that conductors would come to check the ticket. Well, I still had some luck…no one came to check.

How did I lose it? And when? These questions came to my mind. On the train back to Bolzano, I was thinking about this. After thinking for a while, I guessed I lost the wallet in H&M shop. I found some pants I liked there. While I walked to the fitting room, one woman walked near me in the opposite direction. She had very bad body odor. I felt it, but I did not care. I enjoyed shopping. Then, in the fitting room, I noticed that my handbag was open, but I thought I forgot to zip it. So, I just zipped it. Actually, I did not forget. I was sure. It was her; she was a theft!!!

Fortunately, my passport and resident permit was still with me and it was the last day of my trip. I don’t know what I should do if it happens on the first day of the trip. How could I travel without money? I learned from this incident that to travel alone I need to prepare well. And even though this thing happened to me, I still would say that I had a really great time in Florence; I hope I have a chance to go back there again.
