Golden Mountain…worth a little climb

Phu Khao Thong or Golden Mountain in English is an artificial hill located in Wat Saket. Phu Khao means mountain and Thong means gold.

This time I didn’t visit the temple or Wat Saket, but I instead walked up to the mountain. This mountain is not that high. Only 300 steps, you will reach the top of the mountain. Don’t worry about the climbing. It was not difficult to climb since the steps were not too steep. I spent the late afternoon there and it took me less than 15 minutes to climb up the spiral stairs. There were several spots to take a break. I also saw one coffee shop where you could have a cup of coffee and take a break.

Along the way, you will see the statues of Mother Earth Squeezing Her Hair which is known as Phra mae thorani beeb muay phom for Thais. According to The Legend of Buddha, when the Buddha meditated under the tree, the demon tried to disturb and stop him from reaching enlightenment. Phra mae thorani helped the Buddha by twisting her long hair wash away the demon.

There are also rows of bells. Don’t forget to ring the bells. We believe that it brings good fortune.

When you reach the top of the mountain, you will see a good view of the city.

This place is not a top attraction to visit in Bangkok. You might consider visiting this place if you are bored with people and want to escape from the fuss. When my friend and I went there, this place was not crowded like Wat Pho or Wat Phra Kaew. Since Bangkok is always hot, I recommend you to go there early morning or late afternoon. The panoramic view is worth the steps!
