If you intend to shop in Bangkok and have done research about shopping places in Bangkok, I am sure that both Pratunam Market and MBK Center are in your destination list. In this post I will compare these two shopping places in several aspects. If you cannot visit both places because of time limitation, this blog post might help.
Pratunam Market is an outdoor shopping market. If you want to go to this market, I do recommend you to go either in the morning or in the evening (Morning is the best time for cheap products). MBK Center is an indoor shopping mall, so you can enjoy shopping even in a hot day.
Pratunam Market is a not-so-big market that you can walk around within a day or half a day, while MBK Center is a high building that has about 2,000 shops and is difficult to visit all shops within a day.
Pratunam Market is famous for cheap fashion items such as clothing and accessories, while MBK Center offers wide range of products. At MBK Center you can expect to buy souvenirs, Thai handicraft, local products and also brand name products.
Most of the shops at Pratunam Market accept bargaining. You are expected to buy in bulk and then you will get discount. For MBK Center, some shops accept bargaining and some shops do not accept bargaining.
Both shopping places are open daily. MBK Center are open from 10.00-22.00. Pratunam Market are open from 05.00 to 21.00
Pratunam Market does not connect with any rapid transportation system. You can take BTS Skytrain to either Chidlom Station or Ratchathewi Station. Then, take taxi or a short walk.
Update: May 2017 Recently we have a new skywalk connecting between Chidlom BTS Station and Platinum Mall. So it is very convenient to walk from BTS Chidlom to Pratunam Market. You can follow my guide here to walk to Platinum Mall. Then walk through the mall to Pratunam Market.
MBK Center connects with BTS Skytrain. There is a bridge connecting you from the skytrain to the mall. Just get off at National Stadium Station.
