Songkran is a traditional Thai New year. Thai celebrates this festival from 13 to 15 April all over Thailand, and the festival might start earlier, and end later for some places in Thailand.
How is Bangkok during Songkran Holiday? I would say ‘quiet’ because many people, who are working in Bangkok, go back to their home towns to visit their relatives. You can expect no traffic jams in Bangkok. Well, it does not mean there is no celebration in Bangkok.
Places to join the festival
In Bangkok, there are many places that you can join the ‘splash water’ event. Khao San and Silom Road is the most popular place. You can expect to see this event at Siam Square and Central World Shopping Mall (in front of the mall). For night splash water party, just go to Ratchada area or RCA (Royal City Avenue), a Bangkok street of bars and clubs.
It is quite difficult to avoid getting wet during the festival, even if you do not go to those places. On a street there are people with a big tank of water waiting you; you can expect to get wet when you are on the non-aircon bus. So, the only way to not get soaked is to stay home during the festival.
So, should you visit Bangkok during Songkran?
You decide! If you want to join the festival, I recommend you to come here. Bangkok is one of the great places in Thailand that you can have fun splashing water. But if you do not want to join the festival, probably this is not a great time to visit Bangkok for you. April is the hottest month in Thailand and I think sometimes it is too hot to explore the city.
