Steve Jobs and his three stories

About five years ago, one day when I was discouraged and I did not want to do anything. My colleague suggested me to listen to Steve Jobs’ commencement address at Standford University in 2005. It was my colleague favorite speech. He told me that he kept this speech’s file in his iPhone, so he could listen to it whenever he wanted; and he listened to it almost every day.

It is one of the world’s most famous speeches that I had never heard about it before. In the speech, Jobs told us three stories from his life.

1) Connecting the dots 2) Love and loss 3) Death

The first story, connecting the dots, is so true to me. Actually, I think It is true to everyone. It is about trust in something because we cannot connect the dots looking forward; we can only connect them backwards. So we have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in future. It inspired me to do my best of what I am doing.

The second story, love and loss, is about finding what you love because it is the only way to do great work. And if we haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.

And the last story, death, is about living as if we are going to die. We all could not escape it, so there is no reason not to follow our heart. Don’t be trapped by the noise of other people.

Have you ever listened to this commencement address? If your answer is no, I recommend you to listen to it. It is the best commencement speech that I have ever heard. It is very inspirational and motivational story. It is a 15-minute speech that is worth watching, and I should have listened to his commencement speech since I graduated.
