Suphanburi… A get away from Bangkok

Suphanburi is a province in the center of Thailand with many natural and cultural attractions. My friend and I wanted to get away from Bangkok and Suphanburi was just only an hour drive from Bangkok, so it was a perfect destination. We made it as a day trip, so we could visit only 3 places: Samchuk Market, Bueng Chawak, and Buffalo Villages. If you want to escape from hustle city like Bangkok, I truly recommend you this province.

Samchuk Market

Samchuk market is an ancient market with a century old along Thajeen River. This market is full with wooden shops selling foods and drinks. We enjoyed walking and eating. It was very easy to find traditional Thai desserts and coffee there.

We also enjoyed taking photos with the vintage stuffs. There were also shops selling vintage toys, vintage games which reminded me of good old days. Besides, there was a museum in the market telling us the history of this market.

What impressed me most was the scale that the market officers provided for visitors to weigh what they buy in the market and inform the officer in case they are cheated. I’ve never found something like this in Thailand before. It’s so good for the buyers!!!

Update: January, 2014

Location: Sam Chuk District

Opening Hours: Everyday from 08:00 to 17:00

Admission fee: Free

How to get there: Private car, van (the van terminal is around Khok Wua intersection, opposite the government lottery office), and bus ( You can go to either Mo Chit Mai bus terminal or Sai Tai bus terminal. Get on the bus “Bangkok-ThaChang”). If you choose to go by van or by bus, in order to ensure that you get on the right bus and get off at the right bus stop, I do recommend you to tell the driver or conductor that you want to go “Sam Chuk” when you boarding.

Bueng  Chawak

Bueng Chawak is the natural lake covering 2,700 rai with a variety of flora and fauna. This place is divided into 11 zones such as freshwater crocodile pond, tiger and lion cages, native vegetable garden, and so on. For me, the main highlight is Bueng Chawak Aquarium which has 3 buildings. We paid 30 baht each as an admission fee. Then, we realized that that fee was for only first 2 buildings. For the building 3, the visitors need to pay 150 baht more. So, we decided not to visit the building 3. I didn’t enjoy this place much, maybe because of the weather. Or maybe I was too old because I saw children had a great time there.

Buffalo Villages

This place exhibits the traditional Thai rural life and how buffalos are used to do rice farming. Nowadays machines are used more and more and farmers are rarely use buffalos to grow rice. I personally like this tourist attraction because it raises awareness of the role of buffalos.

This place was not in our plan from the beginning. We were there in the late afternoon, but luckily we were in time for the buffalo show which was the main attraction. We also were allowed to touch or even ride the buffalos.

After watching the show, we walked around the villages to see traditional Thai houses which was another highlight of Buffalo Villages.  There are also resorts available for people who want to stay overnight.
