Thai desserts, Part 1

Well, first of all, I have to confess that I am not that into desserts, especially Thai desserts. For me, they are too sweet. But if I visit a country, I would love to try its food which means its desserts too. So, I intend to share you Thai desserts and also recommend you the shops or restaurants that are well-known for those deserts. Hope it is useful for you!

Mango with sticky rice – Kao Nieow Ma Muang – ข้าวเหนียวมะม่วง

If you love Thai foods and always go to Thai restaurants, I am sure that you must know this dessert. I think mango with sticky rice is probably the most well-known Thai dessert. It is deliciously sweet. Oh… I am talking about yellow mango, not the green one. Do not get me wrong. Mango with sticky rice is not difficult to find in Bangkok; you can get it on the street. The most famous species is Nam Dok Mai.

Kao Niew Moon Mea Vari is one of the most popular shops where you can get this dessert all year long. As I know this shop is well-known not only for locals, but also foreigner. When they are thinking of mango with sticky rice, they are thinking of this shop. The mangoes from this shop are always delicious and sticky rice is a little mushy which is so gooood!!!

Black Jelly with syrup – Chaokuay – เฉาก๊วย

Actually I am not sure if this dessert is Thai, but you can find it in Bangkok and also in other Asian countries for sure. It is a Chinese jelly black in color mixed with syrup or brown sugar. Usually we eat it with ice. Even if I have told you that I was not into desserts, but this one is an exception!!!

Chao Kuay Cha Kang Rao is my best Chao Kuay. I usually bought them from a stall on the street. It is not easy and, at the same time, not difficult to find. If you happen to see it, try it!


Bananas in coconut milk – Kluay Buad Chee – กล้วยบวดชี

It is a classic dessert for Thais. This dessert is very easy to cook, but delicious. What you need is only banana (ripe), coconut milk, sugar, and salt. If you are a banana lover, you might love it.


Look Choop – ลูกชุบ

Look Choop is a dessert shaped like fruits or vegetable. It was my favorite dessert when I was young; I liked it because of its color. Look Choop is a colorful and attractive dessert for not only children. The main ingredient of this dessert is mung been.
