Thai festivals: Vegetarian Festival

In Thailand, we have a vegetarian festival that some local will eat only vegetarian dishes (avoid animal meat and also products from animal). This vegetarian festival is called “Kin Jay” by local.

Normally this festival takes place during the ninth Chinese lunar month which is around October and it usually lasts for a period of 9 days; some people prolong it one more day to be 10 days in total. This year is special because the festival is held twice. The first time started from September 24th to October 2nd and the second time will be from October 24th to November 1st.

In Bangkok, every year a festival celebration is held at Yaovarat or Chinatown. Phuket is another province that has a big celebration. During the festival, you will see yellow flags everywhere in the city. It is a sign telling people that these foods are vegetarian foods.

In the markets, you will see many food stalls selling only vegetarian dishes.

In the shopping malls, you will see “Jay’s corner”. The products that are considered “meat-free” will be grouped and put together in the special dedicated shelves.

For me, it is a good chance to detox! If you visit Thailand during the festival, I do recommend you to try the vegetarian dishes on streets because many of them are unbelievable mouth-watering dishes.
