Wang Lang Market or Wang Lang Alley is a great place to shop and eat for all ages. Here, you will see high-school students, university students, working people, and also elders. It is located on the banks of Chao Phraya River on the Thonburi side. Many local people take a cross-river ferry to shop here. However, I haven’t seen so many tourists here.
This outdoor market is well-known for its delicious food and secondhand products. It is open every day and very crowded on weekends. This market sells almost everything you want, but it is not organized well. The market is not divided into sections. You will see the food carts in front of the cloth shops. However, this market is not that big. You can walk around easily. Same as other markets in Bangkok, you need to prepare cash. Most shops do not accept credit card.
For me, this market is a ‘real market’ in Bangkok, and it is not that far from the main tourist attractions such as Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun. You might consider visiting this market, after visiting the temples.
Update: February, 2014
Location: Tha Wang Lang (Wang Lang Pier), near Siriraj hospital. Get off the skytrain (BTS) at Saphan Taksin station. Take Chao Phraya Express Boat to either Tha Chang or Tha Mahathat (This pier was built to replace Tha Phra Chan which is now closed for renovation). Then, take a cross-river ferry to Wang Lang Pier (only 3 baht).
Opening Hours: Everyday from 11:00 to 17:00 (Some shops are open earlier.)
