Where to stay in Bangkok for first timers

Bangkok is a capital city of Thailand. This city is full with historical sites, high office buildings, shopping malls, markets, and so on. If you are going to visit Bangkok for the first time and are finding a place to stay, you might be confused. In Bangkok, there are many areas that you can stay. Some are close to sightseeing spots, while some are close to shopping malls. Which area is the best?

In this post, I intend to share you the popular areas that tourists choose to stay in Bangkok, their pros&cons. Then, you can choose the one that matches your preference. Hope it helps.

Khao San

The first area that I can think of is Khao San. Khao San is the name of the short street which is full with pubs, bars, and restaurants. Here, you can expect fun and party atmosphere at night. Backpackers or budget travellers from around the world choose to stay. This is a place where you can meet new people and make new friends. Besides, this area is close to The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew. However, the downside of this area is it does not connect with any rapid transportation system (BTS, MRT). And, as you may know, Bangkok has been facing traffic congestions for more than a decade.

Silom is the name of the road in Bangkok. This area is a business area in Bangkok which is full with office buildings. During the days, you will see many local office workers. There are many choices for food here (both street food and restaurant). Besides, you can expect to see pubs and bars here too. They usually open at night. Patpong, the famous red-light district, is also located in this area. For wandering around Bangkok, it is quite easy because the area has both BTS Skytrain and MRT Subway. The only downside of this area is it is not that close to historical sites (Khao San is closer) and not that close to popular shopping places (Sukhumvit is closer). It might take a little longer to travel from your hotel/ hostel to attraction spots, but here you have BTS and MRT.

Sukhumvit is a long road starting from Bangkok to other provinces in Thailand. On Sukhumvit Road, there are many popular areas that tourists love to stay while visiting Bangkok such as

Nana area is one of the best nightlife areas in Bangkok. The area is very close to big shopping malls such as Central World, Siam Paragon, and so on. And it also connects with BTS Sky train.

Asok is another business area in Bangkok. You can see many office buildings here. The area connects with both BTS and MRT. The popular shopping mall in this area is Terminal21 and the popular red-light district in this area is Soi Cowboy.

Thong Lor and Ekamai

Thong Lor and Ekamai are developed areas of Bangkok. It is known by local that rich people living here. It is the entertainment areas where you can see stylish boutiques, cozy cafes, hip bars, and hi-end restaurants. Both Thong Lor and Ekamai connects with BTS Skytrain.

Onnut is the most quiet area on Sukhumvit Road comparing to the first four areas above. In the past, I did not see many foreigners here, but recently I have seen tourists more and more here. They are from both western countries and asian countries. The area connects with BTS Skytrain and was the terminal station of BTS Skytrain. There are many apartments and hostels. However, comparing to the area above, Onnut is father from Bangkok attraction spots.
